SALTADERE DENTAL CLINIC 3-2017
Summary of Dental Clinic in Saltadere
March 16-19, 2017
Everyone helped to set up all the clinic materials on Thursday morning (3/16). We saw our first patients about 10:30 a.m.
Clinic was held Thursday, all day Friday, all day Saturday, and Sunday afternoon.
We saw 41 patients total – 16 males and 25 females. Patients were between the ages of 10 and 70.
21 patients had 1 tooth extracted.
16 patients had 2 teeth extracted
2 patients had 3 teeth extracted
2 patients had 4 teeth extracted
The clinic nurse, Michelle, assisted us with the post-operative counseling. This consisted of instructions to each patient about care during the first 24 hours and several days following. Packets containing ibuprofen, 7-day course of amoxycillan, gauze, and tea bags were given to each patient.
Almost all patients had infection.
One patient had his last two teeth extracted.
Three patients required an hour to extract one tooth. Pulling teeth is very hard work!!
Djimson was our translator for the entire time.
Jack was assisted by Janet Stack and Ginny Zeller.
We left a large assortment of dental tools and equipment in the clinic for future use. All instruments were sterilized and packaged before we left. Sterilization was done with an ultrasound machine, which cleaned all debris off the instruments. This was followed by an hour in an oven. It is hoped that the clinic may be able to offer regular monthly or bimonthly dental clinics in the future. There is a great need. We left complete instructions on use of the sterilization procedure in Kryol. We also left a complete inventory of the instruments.
We were very impressed with the Clinic. It is large, clean, and seems to be working extremely well. It was very busy on Thursday and Friday with Dr. Joseph, the nurses, and Gertrude in the pharmacy.
