FAQs

  • What does quartersawn mean?
Quarterawn boards are those that have been sawed from quartered logs so that the annual rings are nearly at right angles to the wide face. This is preferred over flat-sawn boards because it adds stablity and good visual quality.
  • What is a board-foot (BDFT)?
A board-foot is a volumetric measure of wood; 144 cubic inches to be exact. Typically thought of as a 12"x12"x1" piece of wood.
  • What are live edge boards?
Live edge boards still have the outer layer of the tree attached to one or both edges of the board. These may come with or without the bark still on them.
  • What does rough cut lumber mean?
Rough cut lumber is cut to the true dimensions of the board; therefore, a 2"x4" board is actually 2 inches tall by 4 inches wide. Standard milled board (commonly used in construction) are typically 1/2" shorter on each side.
  • What does "old growth" mean?"
Old growth timber has very tight grain patterns and provides for sturdy and visually appealing wood. Old growth trees have grown in traditionally tall stands of timber that caused slow growth each year.
  • What is "green lumber"?"
Wood that has been freshly sawn is called green lumber. It can be used in construction; however, it might warp/contract slightly when drying. Most of our wood is air dried to 15-20% moisture and suitable for immediate use.
